Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that patients who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a major health publication shows that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals purchasing these treatments must be informed of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a return to original mass within about 18 months.

Analyzing Therapies

The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically have a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified regain.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal might result in the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this medication means hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

The NHS recommend the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals argue that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

People who have come off the medication explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a switch activating and you're instantly ravenous," recalled an individual.

This challenge is worsened if individuals have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined behavioural support.
