The Gaming Giant Recruits Popular Battle Royale Developer to Rescue Troubled Hero Shooter Ambitious Title
2K Games has welcomed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the development team at their internal studio, which is currently working on the forthcoming over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as Project Ethos.
Leadership Transition Follows Mixed Reception
The new appointee steps into the leadership position at the development studio following the exit of former leader Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' lackluster initial reveal last autumn.
On Wednesday, 2K president a key figure informed staff about this decision through an internal memo, which highlighted that early feedback sessions had indicated the need for a more defined direction.
Ismailer noted that the team is now refining Project Ethos with a renewed approach, aiming to address gamer demands.
Trend of Strategic Acquisitions
This announcement follows a comparable step taken by the publisher in August, when they brought on an industry veteran from the Diablo team to contribute to the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.
Below is the complete content from Ismailer's communication:
Team—
I know you all just wrapped up your meeting - I trust you’re as excited as I am with the good news. Last time I shared you all a update, I mentioned the following: “I am confident in this crew. You all are some of the most motivated and innovative creators we have had the chance to work with - and we’re eager for that collaboration to endure.”
Given your hard work and flexibility, particularly over the last year, you continue to prove that.
The player input from last autumn’s Project ETHOS demo was revealing. It confirmed the appeal of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had refinements needed. It uncovered the requirement for a more distinct identity.
It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve come. You took the criticism to mind and overhauled the title with a refreshed goal - one that’s poised to fulfill its promise to our fans.
Our confidence in Project ETHOS strengthens every day. To further the incredible advancement you’ve made, I am thrilled to introduce the new hire as the latest Director of the team. After a period of conversations, Ben starts with us on Monday, October 20.
His management and background in the competitive gaming genre is considerable, having dedicated the past decade and a half producing and managing some of the most well-known titles in gaming, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and more recently, Apex Legends.
I invite you all in greeting Ben next week. We are all excited to persist seeing the progress of the game in the weeks to ahead.
David
Background of the Incoming Leader
The appointee presently holds the role of executive producer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for their flagship title. He previously worked at major gaming companies in diverse production roles on the iconic franchise series, and, before that, had assignments at 2K and Electronic Arts.
Title Details and Vision
Project Ethos was revealed in last year in conjunction with a public demo. At the time, the developers presented the title as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an exciting advancement on the style."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in live gameplay to suit your personal playstyle," the description reads. "Take on the competition with fresh skills, risks, and challenges that change every match. Do you leave securely with your hard-earned loot? Alternatively take a risk, risk it all, and pray your team can secure victory? The choice is up to you."
The game lacks an official launch window or platforms, but players can look forward to further news as development progresses.
